In the 1960s, one way for bands to start was to play in a fan’s back yard. At least until the police showed up. The constables would cut the power and disperse the kids.  If the cops were slow to show up it might mean the band gets to play a few songs.  But it is very uncomfortable knowing you might not get through the opening number.

From back yards to ice cream socials to battle of the bands. Everything was new.  Everything was fun.  Only tiny amounts of money was involved.  But Time grew old, money grew big and crooks appeared.  Record deals, concert tours, merchandise. . .

Through the mid-1960s, Bogus Slogan met, been introduced to, done business with many of these miscreants.  A few lawsuits were pursued.  In the late 60s the invaluable help of the Vertex World Crime League (VWCL) sharply curtailed theft and fraud.  By the time of BS #7 (1980s), the band was a ‘well oiled machine.’

Perkins Palace was built in Pasadena, California (1921) as the Raymond Theater.  The original ownership lasted until 1948. 1500 seats for plays, operas, concerts made the hall an Old Town treasure. The end comes in the 1991 when rent goes unpaid.  

While the building is still there, the insides have been gentrified into lofts, condos and retail space.  Even the parking lot was developed into condominiums.  For 20 years, Gina Zamparelli and The Friends of the Raymond Theater tried nearly anything to keep the building as a theater. When those efforts finally were cut off, the owner of the building (having been frustrated for 2 decades) drove a bulldozer through a side wall and destroyed as much of the interior as he could.
